About This Spot

Stepping into Calavera at Oakland Airport’s Terminal 1 is like finding a vibrant pause in the middle of travel's usual rush. The space hums with a friendly, no-fuss energy — a spot where both weary travelers and local diners can gather around the bar or settle into a corner seat. The pace feels thoughtfully relaxed, a moment carved out for savoring food that’s familiar yet thoughtfully crafted, all while the constant motion of the airport carries on just beyond the windows.

At Calavera, the flavors draw you in with a comforting sense of home: spice and freshness mingle with approachable twists that feel both genuine and satisfying. Whether it’s the warmth of a chicken tinga taco or the hearty presence of a burrito bowl, each bite has a down-to-earth quality that makes the experience more than just airport sustenance. Conversations float gently around the bar, where friendly, attentive staff add a personal touch — making a quick meal feel like a shared human moment rather than part of a hurried layover.

The atmosphere is quietly lively, bolstered by the hum of nearby travelers and the occasional flicker of sports on bar TVs. It’s a place where you might find yourself lingering over a margarita or a carefully crafted burger, appreciating the balanced flavors that speak of tradition and a little playful experimentation. While it suits a solo traveler grabbing a quick bite, it also welcomes small groups who want to reconnect over familiar tastes before or after a flight.

Clean and inviting, Calavera’s presence within the terminal is a reminder that even in transit, thoughtful food and genuine service create moments worth savoring. It stands out quietly, inviting you to pause, refresh, and enjoy a brief but memorable local encounter.

After a long flight I needed some food. Stopped in and sat up at the bar. I ordered a cheese quesadilla and our bartender, Kimberly, went out of her way to give me the cheaper option on the kids menu. My husband got a carne asada burrito bowl. Both of our meals came out quickly and were surprisingly DELICIOUS. I didn't have high hopes based on the other reviews but we very much enjoyed our meals. Kimberly was so friendly and efficient. I highly recommend coming here when you're at the airport for a layover and sitting up at the bar!

A good food option for an airport. Ordering through QR was quick and easy, quality of food was good and service was prompt. You will have to go pick up your food. Getting a drink, water or soda was a bit clunky. You had to walk around trying to figure out. Place was clean and plenty of seating from april 2025. Similar experience as before. food was fresh and delicious

The reviews on here are so polarizing. The smash burger comes with two patties and the cheese is supposed to be fried, that's the style! I really enjoyed the burger and the chips. The salsa was bland (pico de gallo) but they also had alternative hotter salsa which was great! The tacos were good, the carnitas was a bit on the cafeteria side of flavor but the presentation and the amount of food was decent. Service was typical for an airport, not bad but also not like a sit down restaurant. They did forget to add a side of guac we purchased and they gave it to me fairly quick. They do offer soda fountain with Coke Zero on tap which was really good. Lastly, for price - again you're in the Bay Area in an airport. It's going to be pricey. For two of us without alcohol and tip it was $52.

Worth walking from Hawaii(an) to Southwest‽ probably when I'm ready to spend more than at Subway, this is the spot :) prices more than fair for decent portions of above average airport food.
